This train trip is quite scenic and a novel experience in NZ, as train travel is not that common. Great way to travel between Auckland and Wellington.

The Overlander was lot of fun, and travelling by train means you're free to get up and walk around or take pictures from the observation car, have a sleep or eat some food.

The train trip through the middle of the North Island is quite a bit longer than driving, but you do get to go through that great spirally bit of track near the central plateau.
If you want to stop in special places you may be better off driving, but I enjoyed the train trip.
