Backpackers and Hostels

New Zealand is the perfect country to travel around using backpackers or hostels as your travelling accommodation option. There are backpackers or hostels in every scenic corner of New Zealand (over 500). These give you the ability to sleep cheaply and meet friendly people from all parts of the world on their New Zealand Adventure. More are older style motels are getting converted into a great standard of hostel. The smaller the backpackers, the more personalised service you will receive with the owners more likely to be looking after you.  
You will also find some great small backpackers in picturesque places. Backpackers and hostels are the most fashionable way for younger people to see NZ with more older people staying at the smaller style hostels. 
Backpackers and hostels in New Zealand are of high standards offering options from private rooms to the dorm style, with bunk beds. Please specify the type of room when booking. You could expect to pay around $60 for a single room with an ensuite, or $20-$30 for a bed in a 4 bed dorm style room. 
If you want a nice consistent style of hostel, start your trip staying at the YHAs around the country.

• Single: One-person per room
• Double: Two people per room with a double bed
• Twin: Two people per room in separate beds
• Share: Up to four people per room
• Dorm: More than four people per room

You are required to clean up after yourself both in the kitchen and around the backpackers or hostel in New Zealand. Bedding is available, but in some places for an extra cost. You should have your own sleeping bag or bed sheet.

Bookings in NZ are advised from the beginning of November until the end of March.

Staff at the backpackers or hostels are very helpful and can guide you in the right direction with tours around the area to car rentals. In some cases your service will be better than some five star hotels with the owners of the hostel looking after you.
