New Zealanders love to sit back with a great book, and almost equally keen writers, producing more glossy picture books and wildlife guides than you would think possible. Some excellent novels and writers have come out of New Zealand despite the tiny home readership and the great difficulty of breaking into the international market. Some of those great writers include Katherine Mansfield, Janet Frame, Ngaio Marsh, Maurice Shadbolt, Keri Hulme and Margaret Mahy.

Reading is a popular pastime in NZ and everybody thinks they have at least one book in them.
