When we walked the Tongariro Crossing, we found it easy to stay in Taupo. Another option if wanting to do the walk and need somewhere to stay. Go to the little town called National Park and stay at Howards Lodge.

The Tongariro Crossing is a great walk, November is your best time to do it. It's the last month of spring. You should not see much snow on the path. You won't need bookings, as you don't stay overnight anywhere in the park. It will be busy on the weekend's but if you are a fast walker, you'll probably find you get ahead of the crowds on the devil's staircase at the start (it's the most common way to go) You should bo OK after that. You should bus there or park at the other end and bus round.

We loved the walk.
